Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Somfy different from other motorization brands?

Somfy is the world's largest motorized shade manufacturer with over 50 years of engineering and more than 370 million installations globally. Their motors are known for reliability, quiet operation, universal compatibility with virtually any shade or drapery type, and the largest accessory ecosystem in the industry — wired and wireless wall controls, hand-held remotes, timers, sun sensors, wind sensors, the myLink Wi-Fi bridge, the TaHoma smart hub, and commercial Animéo building-management interfaces.

How much do Somfy motorized shades cost in NYC?

Pricing depends on motor tier, shade size, fabric, and smart-home integration. Sonesse 30 RTS battery shades for standard residential windows typically run $750–$1,400 per opening installed. Sonesse ULTRA hardwired motors for primary bedrooms and luxury installs run $1,000–$1,800 per opening. Glydea motorized drapery tracks price from $1,800–$3,500 per opening depending on track length, panel weight, and the cornice or pocket detail. TaHoma smart hubs add $300–$500 to integrate the whole system with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit.

Can Somfy motors be added to my existing shades?

In most cases, yes. Somfy tubular motors (Sonesse 30, Sonesse 40, Sonesse ULTRA) retrofit into existing roller-shade tubes provided the tube is standard 1.5" or 2" diameter and the bracket spacing matches. We measure tube diameter, length, and bracket compatibility on-site before quoting the retrofit. Glydea motorized tracks generally require a new track, but the existing drapery panels usually re-hang without modification.

Does Somfy work with Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit?

Yes. Through the Somfy TaHoma smart hub or the older myLink bridge, Somfy shades expose to Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT, and (via TaHoma) Apple HomeKit, Sonos, Philips Hue, and Nest. Voice commands, sunrise/sunset schedules, and scene presets all work natively. For whole-home integrator work (Crestron, Control4, Savant, RTI, ELAN) Somfy publishes a documented API the integrator consumes directly.

Somfy RTS vs Zigbee vs Wi-Fi — which protocol should I pick?

RTS (Radio Technology Somfy) is the legacy 433 MHz protocol — extremely reliable, long range, and the standard for retrofit work since it doesn't depend on Wi-Fi. Somfy Zigbee (newer Sonesse motors and TaHoma) integrates more cleanly with modern smart-home platforms and supports two-way communication so the hub knows the current shade position. Wi-Fi-direct Somfy motors exist but we rarely spec them — the network load and dropouts make them unsuitable for larger installs. For most NYC residential installs we use Sonesse RTS or Zigbee with a TaHoma hub.

How does Somfy compare to Lutron, Hunter Douglas, and Rollease Acmeda?

Somfy is the price-and-performance leader for residential retrofits and mid-tier new construction — broadest motor library, largest accessory catalog, and the most reliable RF protocol in the industry. Lutron Sivoia QS is the gold standard for whole-home integration where the entire system (lighting, shades, HVAC) lives on a single Lutron head-end — premium price, premium reliability. Hunter Douglas PowerView is excellent for HD-specific shade fabrications. Rollease Acmeda Automate™ is the integrator-favorite for Crestron and Control4 work. We install all four — see our Lutron vs Somfy guide and the Rollease Acmeda Automate page.

Do you repair Somfy motors?

Yes. We provide full Somfy motor diagnostics, limit recalibration, RTS remote reprogramming, TaHoma hub re-pairing, motor replacement on out-of-warranty units, and warranty service for motors still inside the Somfy warranty window. Visit our Somfy repair NYC page for details and pricing.

Do you install Somfy in NYC high-rise buildings?

Yes. We are fully insured (workers' comp and general liability), carry COIs for every major NYC co-op, condo, and commercial building, and schedule around freight-elevator hours. We're set up with most major NYC management companies and complete most residential installs in a single visit. For commercial floors we coordinate with the GC, electrician (for hardwired motors), and AV integrator.

What's the warranty on Somfy motors?

Somfy carries a 5-year limited warranty on Sonesse and Glydea motors, with a 2-year warranty on accessories (remotes, sensors, TaHoma hubs). As an authorized installer we handle warranty claims directly with Somfy for any motor or accessory failure inside the warranty window.

Which neighborhoods do you serve?

We install Somfy across all of Manhattan (UES, UWS, Tribeca, SoHo, Chelsea, Hudson Yards, Midtown, West Village, Greenwich Village, Gramercy, Flatiron, FiDi), Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Fort Greene), Queens (Long Island City, Astoria, Forest Hills, Bayside), the Bronx (Riverdale), Westchester, Long Island, Hoboken, Jersey City, the Hamptons, and Greenwich, CT.
